Postdoctoral Fellows

We welcome applicants from a wide range of backgrounds — architecture, design, geography, urban planning, and beyond — not only those with a strong quantitative or computational background. What matters most is curiosity, rigor, and a genuine interest in high-impact work in urban AI, computational design, spatial analytics, or data-driven planning.

Postdoctoral Fellows

About This Position

  • Shape a research agenda around a real planning or design problem
  • Develop methods and tools, and validate them empirically
  • Work with real-world data, often alongside partner feedback
  • Publish in high-quality journals and conferences
  • Contribute to lab infrastructure where relevant (datasets, benchmarks, tools)
  • Fully funded, project-based position

What We Do

AAIRL focuses on concrete challenges in urban design and planning where AI can extend human capability. Our core research directions include:
  • Human–AI interaction in design
  • Generative architectural and urban design
  • Built-environment analysis
  • Built-environment simulation
Much of our work is carried out with industry and government partners, so our research is tested against real-world constraints: incomplete data, competing objectives, regulation, and the realities of implementation.

What We Look For

  • Urban AI and machine learning for design and planning decision support
  • Human–AI interaction for design tools
  • Spatial analytics, simulation, and benchmarking
  • Applied research with public and private partners
